Trane XR16 Heat Pump
The Trane XR16 (model 4TWR6) is a two-stage heat pump that handles both cooling in summer and heating in the milder shoulder seasons, with a Climatuff compressor built for the long haul. For Toronto and GTA homeowners, Megacity HVAC most often pairs it with a gas furnace so the furnace takes over during deep-winter cold snaps. It carries up to 16.2 SEER2 cooling and 8.1 HSPF2 heating efficiency.

Trane XR16 Heat Pump — FAQ
How does the XR16 heat us through a Toronto winter?
A heat pump pulls heat from outside air, and its output drops as temperatures fall. The XR16 is rated up to 8.1 HSPF2, which is good for our shoulder seasons, but it isn't meant to carry a home solo through the coldest stretches here. We usually install it as a dual-fuel system: the heat pump does the efficient work in milder weather, and your gas furnace takes over during deep cold snaps. We'll walk you through the right pairing for your home.
How efficient is the XR16 and is it ENERGY STAR rated?
It's rated up to 16.2 SEER2 for cooling and up to 8.1 HSPF2 for heating, which puts it in Trane's reliable mid-tier. This specific model is not ENERGY STAR certified — if certification matters for a rebate or for your priorities, tell us and we'll show you which models qualify.
Does the XR16 qualify for an Ontario heat pump rebate?
Heat pumps can qualify under current Ontario heat pump rebate programs, but eligibility depends on the equipment specs and the program rules at the time of install — and the rebate has to be applied for through a contractor registered with that program. Note this particular model is not ENERGY STAR certified, which some programs require. We'll confirm what the XR16 qualifies for before you commit, with no guesses.
What size do I need and how loud is it?
The XR16 comes in 2 to 5 ton sizes. The right size depends on your home's square footage, insulation, windows and ductwork, so we do a proper load calculation rather than just matching your old unit. On sound, it runs at about 72 dB(A), or 74 on the 5-ton — quieter on its lower stage, which is where a two-stage unit spends most of its time.
