Why Indoor Air Quality Matters
Canadians spend roughly 90% of their time indoors, and indoor air can be 2-5 times more polluted than outdoor air according to Health Canada. In Toronto, seasonal allergens, dust mites, pet dander, mold spores, and cooking fumes all accumulate in your home's air. A proper filtration and ventilation system removes these contaminants, reduces allergy symptoms, and creates a healthier environment for your family.
How We Assess Your Home Before Recommending Anything
We start with the system you already have, because half the time the fix is in there. We check what filter is fitted and whether the cabinet can take a thicker one, look at static pressure across the coil, open the return to see how much air is bypassing the filter through gaps in the sheet metal, and inspect the evaporator coil and drain pan for mold. We also ask what you are actually noticing, whether that is dust settling two days after cleaning, a musty smell when the fan kicks on, or allergies that get worse indoors rather than outdoors. The symptom points at the cause. Dust everywhere is usually a filter bypass problem. A musty smell when the blower starts is usually the coil. Winter nosebleeds and static shocks are humidity.
When an Air Quality Upgrade Is Worth It, and When It Is Not
A UV coil treatment is worth it if you have visible mold on the evaporator coil or a persistent musty smell that returns after cleaning. It is not worth it as a general precaution in a dry, clean system. Media filtration at MERV 11 to 13 is worth it in almost any Toronto home with allergy sufferers or pets, provided the furnace can handle the extra static pressure. A whole-home humidifier is worth it if your winter indoor humidity sits below 30%, which in a forced-air home it usually does. A dehumidifier is worth it if you get condensation on the windows or a damp basement in July. What we will not do is sell you all four. If the honest answer is that a better filter and sealing the gaps at the return will fix what is bothering you, that is the answer you get.
Ventilation: HRVs and ERVs
Newer and well-sealed Toronto homes trap stale air along with the pollutants in it. Filtration cleans the air you already have; ventilation replaces it. A heat recovery ventilator exchanges indoor air for outdoor air while transferring most of the heat back, so you are not throwing your heating bill out the vent. An energy recovery ventilator does the same and also moves some moisture, which suits homes that get too dry in winter. In older leaky homes the building often ventilates itself through the gaps, and adding a unit is not the first thing we would recommend.
What Filter Maintenance Actually Looks Like
A standard 1-inch filter needs changing every one to three months, sooner with pets or during a renovation. A 4 or 5-inch media filter typically runs six to twelve months. UV bulbs lose output long before they stop glowing, so they get replaced annually whether or not the light is still on. Humidifier pads get changed at the start of each heating season. If you are on one of our maintenance plans, we handle the filter and the UV bulb at the visit, and we note the model numbers so you are not guessing at the hardware store.

Do I need an air purifier, or will a better filter do?
In most homes a thicker media filter at MERV 11 to 13, fitted in a cabinet that actually seals, does more than a standalone purifier because it treats every cubic foot the blower moves. A UV system is the right call when the problem is biological growth on the coil rather than particles in the air. We look at the coil and the return before recommending either.
What indoor humidity should a Toronto home hold in winter?
Between 30% and 45% is the usual working range. Below 30% you get dry skin, static, and shrinking hardwood. Push much above 45% in a cold snap and you start getting condensation and frost on the windows, which causes its own damage. A whole-home humidifier with a humidistat holds the level instead of you chasing it.
Can indoor air quality equipment be added to my existing furnace?
Almost always, yes. UV treatment, media filtration, humidifiers and dehumidifiers all install into the existing ductwork and share the furnace blower. The limits are physical space around the plenum and whether the furnace has the static pressure headroom for a thicker filter. We check both on site before quoting.
