What should I check before calling for AC repair?
Make sure the thermostat is set to Cool and below room temperature, check the breaker panel and the outdoor disconnect, swap a clogged filter, and clear anything blocking the outdoor unit. If the indoor coil or lines are iced over, turn the AC off and let it thaw. If none of that works, call us rather than running a system that is not cooling.
When should I replace my AC instead of repairing it?
Consider replacing your AC if it is over 10 to 12 years old, uses R-22 refrigerant (Freon, which has been phased out and is expensive to recharge), needs a compressor, or the repair costs more than half the price of a new unit. A modern 16 SEER unit costs $3,500 to $6,000 installed and uses 25 to 40 percent less electricity than an older 10 to 12 SEER system.
