No heat in cold weather

What to Check Before the Technician Arrives
These take a few minutes and sometimes solve the problem outright. Stop there: anything involving gas, wiring or the burners is a job for a licensed technician.
Thermostat
Set to Heat (or Cool), set a few degrees past room temperature, and replace the batteries if the screen is blank.
Power
Check the furnace service switch (it looks like a light switch near the unit) and the breaker panel for a tripped breaker.
Furnace door
Make sure the front panel is fully closed. A safety switch keeps the furnace off when it is loose.
Filter
A filter packed with dust can shut a furnace down or freeze an AC coil. Swap it if you have a spare.
Vents and outdoor unit
Open supply vents, clear furniture off returns, and make sure the AC outdoor unit is not blocked by snow, leaves or covers.
Status light
Many furnaces show a blinking light code through a small window. Note the pattern and tell us when you call.
