Signs It Is Time for a New Furnace
Age alone does not settle it. Hydro One says a furnace can work reliably for 15 to 20 years, and often longer if it is maintained. What matters is what yours is doing. One of the signs below on a young furnace is usually a repair. Several on a furnace past 15 years is a pattern.
Safety signs: stop and call
- A carbon monoxide alarm goes off. Leave the house and call 911.
- You smell gas. Leave and call 911.
- The flame is yellow, orange or flickering instead of steady blue, or there is soot or rust around the cabinet.
- A technician finds a cracked heat exchanger.
Performance signs: plan a replacement
- Repeated repair calls in one or two seasons
- The furnace cycles on and off in short bursts, or takes several tries to start
- New banging, squealing or rattling
- Rooms that heat unevenly, or a house that cannot hold temperature the way it used to
- Gas bills climbing when your rate and the weather have not

Adding AC or a heat pump

After the install

Not every furnace problem means you need a new system. If your furnace is under 10 years old, this is a first-time breakdown, and the fix is something minor like an ignitor, flame sensor, or thermostat, repair is almost always the better financial call. Replacement makes more sense once your furnace passes 15 years old, needs frequent repairs, has a cracked heat exchanger, or a single repair would cost more than half the price of a new unit. Gas bills that keep climbing despite regular maintenance are another sign: older 60–80% AFUE furnaces waste 20 to 40 cents of every gas dollar, while a modern unit captures nearly all of it.

What Affects the Price of a Furnace Installation

Furnace type
Single-stage, two-stage and modulating furnaces sit at different price points. Higher efficiency costs more up front and less to run.
Home size and heat loss
Square footage, insulation, windows and air leakage set the size. The load calculation decides it, not a rule of thumb.
Venting and ductwork
Moving from a mid-efficiency to a high-efficiency condensing furnace usually means new PVC venting. Damaged or undersized ducts add work.
Gas, electrical and access
Gas line changes, electrical work, and a tight basement or crawlspace can add labour time.
Brand and warranty
Premium modulating models cost more than value lines. Warranty length varies by brand, model and registration.

How long does a furnace installation take in Toronto?
Most furnace installations take 4 to 8 hours and finish in one day. If the job needs ductwork changes or new venting, which is common when going from an older mid-efficiency furnace to a high-efficiency condensing model, it can run into a second day. How do you size a furnace for my home?
With a Manual J load calculation, not by copying the size of the old furnace. We account for square footage, insulation, windows, air leakage and layout. An oversized furnace short-cycles, wears out faster and still leaves rooms uneven; an undersized one runs nonstop on the coldest days.
What furnace brands do you install?
We are an Authorized Lennox Dealer and also install Goodman, Ducane, Daikin and Kepler. We recommend a model based on your home and budget, and every unit is installed by TSSA-certified technicians.
Can I get a new furnace with nothing down?
Yes. As an Enbridge Sustain Trusted Partner, we can install a new furnace through the Enbridge Sustain lease-to-own program with $0 down and maintenance included in one monthly payment. In-house rebates available: ask at your quote. We don't file government rebate paperwork for customers.

Yes. Old furnace removal and disposal is part of every installation, along with new PVC venting and a condensate drain if the new furnace is a condensing model, gas and electrical connections, thermostat setup, and a full combustion and safety test before we leave.
Should I replace my furnace and AC together?

Do you rent furnaces?
