Nine Checks, One Visit, About an Hour
Most of this is gas work, which in Ontario belongs to a licensed technician. Here is what we go through on every furnace tune-up, in roughly the order we do it.
Heat exchanger inspection
Checked for cracks and rust-through. A crack can let combustion gases into the air your furnace circulates, so this is the first thing we look at.
Burners
Pulled, cleaned and checked for an even blue flame. Dirty burners light rough and waste gas.
Flame sensor
Cleaned and tested. A coated sensor is one of the most common reasons a furnace lights and then shuts itself off.
Ignitor
Inspected for hairline cracks and tested. Hot-surface ignitors tend to fail on the first cold nights, when the furnace starts cycling hard.
Blower
Blower wheel, motor and electrical connections checked. A caked blower wheel moves less air and makes the furnace run longer.
Filter check
We check the filter and change it if it is loaded. If yours is an unusual size, we tell you what to buy.
Carbon monoxide check
Combustion and CO readings taken before we pack up. If a number is out of spec, you see it and we explain what it means.
Thermostat calibration
Checked against a reference reading and adjusted, so the house is actually at the temperature on the screen.
Safety controls
Limit switch, rollout switches and pressure switch tested. These are what shut the furnace down when something goes wrong.

Why Book Before the First Cold Snap
Parts fail under load
An ignitor or inducer that is getting weak often holds up through the mild weeks of October and quits once the furnace runs back to back. A tune-up is the chance to catch it on a calm weekday.
Schedules fill on the first cold night
Once temperatures drop, calendars fill with no-heat calls across the GTA. A tune-up booked in September or early October is easy to fit. The same visit in a cold snap is not.
Safety problems are better found early
A cracked heat exchanger or a bad venting reading is something you want to hear about before the furnace is running all day with the windows shut.
When to Book
September and early October are the easy weeks. Book once a year, ideally around the same time, so nothing gets skipped. If you just moved into a house and have no idea when the furnace was last serviced, book now rather than waiting for fall. And if the furnace is making a new noise, cycling on and off, or the flame looks yellow instead of blue, do not wait for a tune-up slot. That is a repair call.

How much is a furnace tune-up in Toronto?
A single furnace tune-up with Megacity HVAC is $120 to $180. That covers the inspection, cleaning and safety checks. If the visit turns up a part that needs replacing, we quote that separately and you decide whether to go ahead. You do not need a maintenance plan to book one.
How long does a tune-up take?
Plan on about an hour. It runs longer if the burners are dirty or a part needs attention. The technician finishes with a combustion and carbon monoxide reading and walks you through what was found.
When should I book it?
September or early October, before the first cold snap. Once the heat is running every day, service schedules across Toronto fill with no-heat calls, and a routine tune-up gets harder to fit in. If you missed the fall window, a mid-winter tune-up is still worth doing.
Do I really need one every year?
Yes. Enbridge recommends a licensed contractor inspect gas appliances at least once a year. Some manufacturer warranties also ask for proof of regular professional maintenance, so it is worth checking your paperwork.
My furnace is on an Enbridge Sustain lease. Do I still pay for a tune-up?
Check your agreement first. Enbridge Sustain lease-to-own plans include maintenance in the monthly payment, so you may already be covered. If you are not sure, call us with your details and we will help you work it out.
What if the technician finds a problem?
You get a plain explanation of what we found and a fixed price to fix it before any work starts. Common parts like ignitors and flame sensors are usually on the truck. If the furnace is old and the problem is serious, we lay out repair and replacement side by side and you choose.
Do you do tune-ups outside Toronto?
Yes. We work out of East York and do tune-ups across Toronto and the GTA, including Scarborough, North York, Etobicoke, Markham, Vaughan, Mississauga and out to Whitby.
